All you need to know about the benefits of lemon

You often hear from many people that they start their day with a glass of warm water. (Oh yes, that’s my daily ritual too.) Drinking water the moment you wake up helps to cleanse your internal system, and get rid of the toxic build-up over the night and re-hydrate your body after a night of sleep. It also helps to “wake” your body digestive system for better absorption of nutrients from the food that you are going to take. (I have so much to tell you about the benefits of drinking water in the morning and I will share with you again in my future post.)

Some people even tell you about squeezing lemon juices into the glass of water and you wonder why. You may not like the sour taste of the lemon juice but do you know that lemon has more health benefiting nutrients as compared to other citrus fruits such as orange and pomelo? And do you know that lemon has much lesser calories? Lemon is low in calories (29 calories per 100g) as compared to orange (47 calories per 100g) and pomelo (38 calories per 100g).

Acidic yet Alkaline?

Yes, lemon has its acidic taste due to the citric acid. But when it is in our bodies after metabolized, lemon is one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. How is it so? Citric acid and ascorbic acid found in the lemons are weak acids which are easily metabolized from the body and the mineral content of the lemons help to alkalize the blood. This balances and maintains the pH levels in your body. A too acidic body (also known as Acidosis) will result in negative effect on your skin, hair and nails. Your skin dries out easily, your hair may fall out or break easily and your nails can appear thin and crack easily.

One of the benefits of lemon is the removing of unwanted toxins in the body as lemon increases the rate of urination in the body. The toxins are flushed out at a faster rate, aids in detoxification. It provides enzymes to the liver which is required for digestion.

Lemon is rich in Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that helps in anti-inflammation. It helps to reduce the amount of phlegm produces by your body, and keep you from cold and flu. For people who have asthma or respiratory problems can consider taking more lemons.
