Ten steps to prevent wrinkles – Part 1

Skin is the largest organ on our body. It comprises three layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (middle layer), and the hypodermis (subcutaneous fat). The dermis contains collagen, elastin, and other fibers that support the skin’s structure. It gives the elasticity and smoothness of your face. This is also the layer which are damaged by UV radiation (UVR). Now you understand why people around you has been telling you to wear your sunscreen before you step out of your house. 

UVR is made up of two different types of waves – UVA and UVB. When your skin is exposed to UVR, the cells in the middle layer (dermis) will produce melanin to the epidermis -> which cause you to be tanned. UVA rays are responsible for penetrating into the dermis layer, damaging the collagen fibers whereas UVB rays (shorter wavelength than UVA rays) contribute to the sun burn. The damage of the collagen fibers will cause and increasingly production of abnormal elastin, result in the production of enzymes called metalloproteinase, leading to the degrading of collagen. Thus, wrinkles will be formed gradually. You always hear from people that we should consume more antioxidant food. Why is it so? Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals before they can do any damage to the skin. When you are exposed to UV rays of light, the number of free radicals increases. Thus, making radicals to be more active and do more damage to your skin.  (Also known as photo-aging, which leads to wrinkles formation). Here are some tips which you can prevent wrinkles. 

1. Water Bottle Mouth. 

Avoid using a straw when you have your drink. As you purse your lips with a straw, lines around your lips will start to develop from the repetitive muscle motion. For someone who uses straws several times in a day stands a chance of having wrinkle developing around the areas of the mouth. Do not worry if you use straws a few times a week or 1-2 times a day. The possibility of wrinkle forming on your lips will not be very high. e simplest and cheapest solution is to drink water out of something with a wider mouth, like a cup.

2. Stop the chewing gum. 

By repeating the same motion of chewing, wrinkles are more visible on the side where you chew. When you chew gum, tissues will be broken down and developing folds around the mouth and lips. 

3Love to wear your sunglasses. 

When you’re under bright light, your eyes tend to squint and this may cause fine lines around your eyes – called the Crow’s Feet. By wearing sunglasses, it reduces the amount of squinting you do when exposed to direct sunlight. Moreover, it helps to block out UV rays so the fragile skin around the eyes is protected from sun damage. There are a lot of different fashion shades available. However, you should wear one that has UV protection. Wearing lenses without UV protection might actually cause you more harm. In addition, remember to apply sunscreen lotion near your eye area, mouth and cheeks. They need to be protected to prevent premature aging and wrinkles. 

4. Moisturize. 

After cleansing your face, tone, remember to moisturise your skin at all time. This keeps your face hydrated and not dry. You can then proceed with applying the sunscreen 20 minutes before you step out of your house. 

5. Stop Smoking. 

Smoking causes the blood vessels of your skin to constrict. When your blood vessels constrict, this means that there will be lower blood flow and reduces oxygen supply. Remember that your skin needs to be nourished from the oxygen and nutrients carried in the blood. Now do you understand why some facial salons provide oxygen facial? Aside from this, harmful chemicals in cigarettes reduce the strength and elasticity of the skin, causing wrinkles to form.
