Differences between sunblock and sunscreen

We all use these two words Sunblock and Sunscreen interchangeably because we thought they are the same. BUT do you know that they are actually different in their functions and purpose? Do you know how to identify the differences between sunblock and sunscreen? While both of them protect you from the damaging UV rays of the sun, sunblock reflects the light from your skin, blocking the rays from entering into your skin whereas sunscreen coats your skin, and acts like a sponge which absorb the UV rays to protect your skin, where it converts into less damaging form of radiation. Sunblock works immediately when you apply on your skin while you will need to apply sunscreen lotion 15-20 minutes before it can actively protect your skin from damage.

The basics you need to know about sunscreen

Even a dog knows the importance of wearing sun shades. What about us? You know that it is very important to apply your sunscreen on a sunny day but do you know that it is as important wearing sunscreen on cloudy days and to reapply the cream after a few hours? How much do you know about the basics of sunscreen? Most of us know that sunscreens help to filter out the UV light from the sun and the higher the SPF the greater the protection. There are two types of UV light that will cause skin damage. UVA will cause premature aging and wrinkles, while the short wave UVB is primarily responsible for sunburn. Broad-spectrum lotions covers overall protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.

The SPF, or sun protection factor, is an indication of the ability of protecting the skin from UVB. The best sunscreen is the one having the highest SPF number. The sunscreen with SPF of 30 provides a better protection than one with SPF 15. It tells how long it will take for the skin to be sunburned.

Home Remedies for Skin Pigmentation – Part 2

Skin pigmentation disorders are conditions that cause the skin to appear lighter or darker than normal, or blotchy and discoloured. They include freckles, melasma, sun spots. Whether you are white or black, we all face skin pigmentation disorders. Skin pigmentation disorders occur because the body produces either too much or too little melanin. Melanin is a pigment found in our body which gives the color of our hair, skin and eye. Melanin protects our body by absorbing the ultraviolet light.

There are products out there in the drugstore that targets skin pigmentation, products that contain hydroquinone. It is the most effective ingredient that helps reduce and eliminate brow skin discolorations known as melasma.  If you would like to try some home remedies for skin pigmentation, you may try the following methods. I’ve not tried them personally but they are the few common ones that people have been trying all these while.

5. Guava contains lycopene which is an ingredient that treats the darkening of skin due to sun exposure. Banana contains Vitamin A that gets rid of dark spot and blemish.

Ten steps to prevent wrinkles – Part 2

Skin is the largest organ on our body. It comprises three layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (middle layer), and the hypodermis (subcutaneous fat). The dermis contains collagen, elastin, and other fibers that support the skin’s structure. It gives the elasticity and smoothness of your face. This is also the layer which are damaged by UV radiation (UVR). Now you understand why people around you has been telling you to wear your sunscreen before you step out of your house.

UVR is made up of two different types of waves – UVA and UVB. When your skin is exposed to UVR, the cells in the middle layer (dermis) will produce melanin to the epidermis -> which cause you to be tanned. UVA rays are responsible for penetrating into the dermis layer, damaging the collagen fibers whereas UVB rays (shorter wavelength than UVA rays) contribute to the sun burn. The damage of the collagen fibers will cause and increasingly production of abnormal elastin, result in the production of enzymes called metalloproteinase, leading to the degrading of collagen.
